Mapei grout coverage calculator: consumption by product line
Five reference layouts, five product lines, two unit systems. Consumption is joint volume × apparent density — the same arithmetic Mapei's data sheets use — expressed in kg/m² and lb/ft² so you can audit either the European or the US label.

Tip
Multiply the lb/ft² figure by your area, add your waste %, and you have the exact bag math the tool above runs — no internet needed at the store.
Warning
Opticolor and Flexcolor CQ are pail products: their “package” is a liquid volume, so consumption per liter — not per kilogram — is the number to divide by.
Don't
Don't mix consumption figures between product lines. Kerapoxy CQ at 1.7 kg/L is 6% heavier per liter than Ultracolor — per-liter mixing, not per-kg, is what the kit math needs.
How this Mapei tile grout calculator works
Every figure on this page comes from one chain, and you can audit it with a tape measure and a phone calculator. First, the tile grid determines what share of the surface is actually joint: for a tile of length L and width W with joint g, the tile occupies L × W of each (L + g) × (W + g) cell, so the joint share is 1 − (L × W) ÷ ((L + g) × (W + g)). Second, that share times the area and the joint depth — normally the tile thickness — gives the joint volume. Third, volume becomes weight through the product's apparent density, and weight becomes packages through the bag, pail, or kit size.
The tool accepts the inch habits the search for a mapei grout calculator in inches expects: type 1/8 or 0.125 in the joint field and both are read identically. Metric users type millimeters directly. Switching unit systems converts the inputs, not just the labels, so a 100 ft² job becomes a 9.29 m² job rather than nonsense.
Epoxy kits, converted by the liter
Cementitious Mapei grout is bought in pounds or kilograms, but Kerapoxy CQ is sold as a multi-part kit and metered by volume. The conversion is one division: mixed epoxy at 1.7 kg/L means a 9 lb (4.1 kg) kit yields ≈ 2.4 L. A 100 ft² floor in 12 × 12 in tile with 1/8 in joints holds 1.44 L of joints — call it 1.6 L with waste — so one kit and a small remainder covers it. The calculator prints joint volume in liters for the kit products so you can do this division against any kit size your market sells, including the metric kits common on mapei.com European sites.
Regional Mapei sites: US, UK, Australia, Canada and beyond
Searches like mapei grout calculator usa, mapei grout calculator uk or mapei grout calculator australia all land on the same physics but different packaging. mapei.com US editions sell Ultracolor Plus FA in 10 lb and 25 lb bags; UK, Irish and Australian sites quote 5 kg and 10 kg bags; Canadian retail mixes both. The consumption per square meter never changes — only the package the answer divides by. That is why this tool asks for the package through the product selector instead of hard-coding one country's bag sizes, and why the shopping list copies out in the unit system you are browsing with. There is no official Mapei mobile app for grout consumption; Mapei publishes consumption data inside the product data sheets on mapei.com, and this browser tool fills the gap — it runs entirely on your device, works offline once loaded, and nothing you type is transmitted anywhere.
Worked example: 120 ft² kitchen floor in Ultracolor Plus FA
Joint share
12 in tile + 1/8 in joint: 1 − (12 × 12) ÷ (12.125 × 12.125) = 2.05%. Nearly one fiftieth of your floor is joint.
Joint volume
2.05% × 8 mm depth = 0.164 L per m². In liters: 11.15 m² × 0.164 = 1.83 L of joints to fill.
Bags
1.83 L × 1.6 kg/L = 2.93 kg = 6.5 lb; +10% waste = 7.1 lb → one 10 lb bag, with 2.9 lb of margin for future repairs from the same lot.
The same 120 ft² in 2 × 2 in mosaics with 1/16 in joints needs 11.15 m² × 0.358 L/m² × 1.6 kg/L = 6.4 kg — 14.1 lb, or 15.5 lb with waste, so two 10 lb bags. That is the mosaic jump in one number: 2.2× the grout of large-format tile at a thinner joint.
Ultracolor Plus FA vs Flexcolor CQ vs Keracolor vs Kerapoxy CQ
The four calculator presets side by side — what changes is not the math but the material properties that decide whether the math survives your job site.

Opticolor, the silicate-modified “no-haze” grout, sits outside this comparison on purpose: it is marketed in pails on Mapei's European sites and its 1.45 kg/L density gives it the lowest consumption per square meter of the line — the numbers are in the coverage table above. For grout color planning rather than quantity, Mapei's own color tools on mapei.com are the right destination.
Mapei grout FAQ — measured, not guessed
Top QuestionDecision KnotWhy does my Mapei grout usage differ from the tech sheet number?
Measured consumption for Ultracolor Plus FA on 12 × 12 in tile with 1/8 in joints is 0.054 lb/ft² (0.262 kg/m²) at an 8 mm joint depth — the deviation from the tech sheet is caused by joint depth, not joint width. Raising the depth from 8 mm to 10 mm lifts consumption 25% to 0.328 kg/m², while a 10% tile-size mis-measure moves the figure under 2%. Measure depth with the actual tile stack, not the box spec, and the numbers converge to within a few percent.
Top QuestionHow much Ultracolor Plus FA do I need per square foot?
0.054 lb/ft² (0.262 kg/m²) is the working figure for 12 × 12 in tile with 1/8 in joints at 8 mm depth. The chain: joint share 2.05% of the surface × 0.008 m depth = 0.164 L of joint volume per m²; × 1.6 kg/L apparent density = 0.262 kg/m² = 0.054 lb/ft². Mosaics run much higher — 2 × 2 in with 1/16 in joints needs 0.117 lb/ft², 2.2× the large-format figure.
How many square feet does a 10 lb bag of Ultracolor Plus FA cover?
About 186 ft² on 12 × 12 in tile with 1/8 in joints (10 lb ÷ 0.054 lb/ft²), and about 85 ft² on 2 × 2 in mosaics with 1/16 in joints (10 lb ÷ 0.117 lb/ft²). Large-format 24 × 24 in tile with 3/16 in joints stretches a bag to roughly 198 ft². Subtract 10% waste from any of these before you commit to a bag count.
Decision KnotHow many Kerapoxy CQ kits do I need for my area?
Convert joints to liters, then divide by kit volume. One 9 lb Kerapoxy CQ kit yields ≈ 2.4 L of mixed epoxy. A 100 ft² bathroom floor in 12 × 12 in tile with 1/8 in joints holds 9.29 m² × 0.164 L/m² = 1.52 L — so one kit covers ≈ 157 ft². With 10% waste, 200 ft² needs 3.35 L, i.e. two kits with a workable remainder.
Is Flexcolor CQ coverage different because it is pre-mixed?
Yes — you buy liquid volume, so the pail label in gallons is what matters. One 1-gallon pail holds 3.785 L ≈ 5.7 kg of mixed grout at 1.5 kg/L, which covers about 248 ft² of 12 × 12 in tile with 1/8 in joints (5.68 kg ÷ 0.246 kg/m² = 23.1 m²). Do not apply the dry-bag waste habit to premix: Flexcolor CQ re-seals in the pail, so under-buying by one pail is a cheap mistake to avoid by ordering 1.1× the computed need.
Does Mapei publish grout consumption in both kg/m² and lb/ft²?
Yes — Mapei data sheets state consumption in kg/m², and US editions quote lb/ft², with the conversion at 1 kg/m² = 0.2048 lb/ft². The tables on this page reproduce that arithmetic: joint volume × apparent density, using the densities Mapei publishes (1.45–1.7 kg/L across the line). Treat the outputs as computed estimates, then confirm the final number against the bag or pail label you actually hold.
What joint widths can each Mapei grout take?
Ultracolor Plus FA: 1/16 in to 1/2 in (1.5–12 mm). Keracolor U (unsanded): below 1/8 in (3 mm). Keracolor S (sanded): 1/8 in and wider. Flexcolor CQ: 1/16 in to 1/2 in. Kerapoxy CQ: 1/16 in to 1/2 in (up to 15 mm in some markets). Exceeding the range risks cracks in unsanded joints and slump in over-wide epoxy joints.
Is this Mapei grout calculator official?
No. This page is independent of Mapei and is not endorsed by them. The computation method (joint-volume × apparent density) and the density values follow what Mapei publishes in its public product data sheets on mapei.com, but the tables and tool outputs on this page are calculated, not copied from a single tech sheet. For contract work, verify against the tech sheet for your exact batch and the label on the package.
