SPECTRALOCK PRO — epoxy is the default answer in a shower

Constantly wet walls, a curb, a niche and 45–90 minutes of pot life per batch. Epoxy removes the sealing question entirely and resists the shampoos and cleaners that fade cement color.

Before — the guess

“Two full units should do a tub surround” — an 8 × 10 ft shower with a niche actually computes to 1.4 units; the second unit is opened, half-used, and thrown away when the pot life expires.

After — the computed plan

Computed plan: 1 full unit + 1 half unit, mixed one half at a time. Waste lands near the 15% coefficient instead of the 40% guess-tax.

Waste removed vs guessing≈ 35% of epoxy spend on a typical shower

Scenario adjustment coefficient: ×1.15 applied on top of net joint volume.

Tip

Epoxy purchase rule: liters first, kits second. Divide joint liters by 2.3 L per full unit — never by weight, because Part C filler changes the bag weight but not the yield.

Warning

The official chart's 12 × 12 row assumes 8 mm joints depth. Porcelain floor tile at 9.5 mm consumes 19% more — add it yourself or come up short on a Monday delivery.

Don't

Don't reuse a cement-grout coverage figure for epoxy. At 1.9 kg/L, Spectralock needs 19% more mass per liter than Permacolor — same joint, different chemistry.

The unique angle

Online calculator vs the official LATICRETE Excel chart

Contractors ask this constantly: the chart says one thing, a browser tool says another, and someone is about to buy the difference. Here is the reconciliation. The official chart and this page share one core: tile ratio → joint share × depth → volume → weight. The chart then applies two conservative adjustments — an embedded 10–15% job-site allowance and an 8 mm depth assumption for its rows — so its coverage per unit prints lower than pure geometry. Neither number is wrong; they answer different questions. The chart answers “what should the average crew buy to never run short?” Pure math answers “what does the joint physically hold?”

Chart's arithmetic (reconstructed)

  1. Tile ratio per row (e.g., 12 × 12 @ 1/8 in → 1.94% joint share)
  2. Volume at the row's fixed 8 mm depth: 0.155 L/m²
  3. Weight via line density (epoxy 1.9 kg/L, cement 1.6 kg/L)
  4. +12% embedded allowance, rounded to the selling unit

When to trust which

  • Chart: fixed bid, unfamiliar crew, no time to measure depth.
  • Computed: measured depth in hand, single crew, tight color-lot matching.
  • Both: run computed, add your own coefficient, then verify it lands within 5% of the chart. If it doesn't, your depth input is lying.

The two red flags, stated once, loudly

Red flag: cementitious grout (Permacolor / Ready-To-Use) anywhere water pools daily — it is not the failure point itself, but it demands sealing forever. Epoxy is the one-purchase answer.

Red flag: mixing a full unit at once above 80 °F (27 °C) — pot life can drop toward 40 minutes and you throw away what sets in the bucket. Halve the batch.

Worked example: 350 ft² porcelain floor in Permacolor Select

01

Joint share

24 × 24 in @ 3/16 in: 1 − (24 × 24) ÷ (24.1875 × 24.1875) = 1.54% of the floor is joint.

02

Volume → weight

1.54% × 10 mm depth = 0.154 L/m². Volume: 32.5 m² × 0.154 = 5.0 L. Weight: 5.0 L × 1.6 kg/L = 8.0 kg = 17.7 lb.

03

Coefficient & bags

× 1.10 floor coefficient = 19.5 lb → one 25 lb bag, with 5.5 lb sealed for future color-matched repairs.

Laticrete coverage FAQ

How does the official LATICRETE coverage chart (and its Excel version) compute coverage?

The published chart runs the same joint-volume core this page does — tile ratio × joint depth × density — then subtracts a built-in job-site allowance of roughly 10–15% and assumes an 8 mm joint depth for its wall-tile rows. That is why a full SPECTRALOCK PRO unit prints as ~135 ft² on the chart for 12 × 12 in tile at 1/8 in joints, while pure joint volume computes 155 ft²: the chart is already carrying your waste factor. If your spreadsheet inputs the depth and waste honestly, the two converge to within a few percent.

How much area does one full unit of Spectralock PRO cover?

One full unit mixes to ≈ 2.3 L of epoxy (≈ 4.3 kg at 1.9 kg/L). By pure joint volume that fills: 155 ft² of 12 × 12 in at 1/8 in joints (8 mm depth), 132 ft² of 12 × 24 in at 1/8 in (9 mm), or 42 ft² of 2 × 2 in mosaic at 1/16 in (6 mm). The half unit exists because Part A and Part B must react at full stoichiometry — halving the mix means halving both parts by weight, which the pre-portioned half unit guarantees.

Why does my Spectralock PRO usage disagree with the official Excel chart?

Measured disagreement has three ranked causes: joint depth (8 mm chart assumption vs a real 9.5 mm floor tile adds 19%); pot-life loss (a full unit mixed at 27 °C sets in the bucket if the install stalls 40 minutes — an 8% unit loss); and temperature-thinned viscosity above 32 °C, which pushes epoxy deeper into the substrate and adds 3–5%. Fix depth first — it alone explains most chart-to-site gaps.

Is Permacolor Select okay for a shower?

Yes — Permacolor Select on a periodically wet shower is a normal, code-conforming installation; keep ventilation and expect to maintain a penetrating sealer on a schedule. The epoxy question is different: a steam shower, a curbless wet room, or any niche that stays damp after the fan quits is where SPECTRALOCK PRO pays its premium back in zero re-sealing.

Is LATICRETE Plasma a grout? (I searched for a Plasma coverage chart)

No — HYDRO BAN® PLASMA is LATICRETE's spray-applied waterproofing and crack-isolation membrane, not a grout. Its coverage math is wet-film based (liters per square meter, two coats), which is why grout coverage charts never list it. If you came from a search like 'laticrete plasma grout calculator', the number you want lives in the membrane data sheet — and this page's grout tools start after the membrane is on.

How much area does a gallon of LATICRETE Ready-To-Use Grout cover?

A 1-gallon pail holds 3.785 L ≈ 5.7 kg of premixed grout at 1.5 kg/L. By joint volume: about 248 ft² of 12 × 12 in at 1/8 in joints (8 mm), 126 ft² of 6 × 6 in at 1/8 in, and 114 ft² of 2 × 2 in mosaic at 1/16 in. Because it reseals, under-buying by one pail is a low-cost error to correct mid-job — the opposite of epoxy economics.

Is there an official Laticrete grout calculator app or Excel file?

LATICRETE publishes coverage charts and estimator spreadsheets through laticrete.com rather than a dedicated mobile app. The charts are the authoritative source for contract quantities. This page is the faster in-browser route: it runs the same joint-volume arithmetic the spreadsheet hides in its cells, needs no download, and keeps working offline once loaded.

Is this Laticrete grout calculator official?

No. It is an independent tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by LATICRETE. Densities and product packaging follow LATICRETE's published data; consumption figures are computed from joint volume and clearly labeled. For contract or warranty work, verify quantities against the official coverage chart and the packaging label for the unit you buy.
